Webinar
All organisational and individual members of the IAP are invited to join us for a webinar organised by the International Association of Prosecutors Global Training Academy in conjunction with the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI).

Speaker:
Francesca Restifo, Senior Human Rights Lawyer and UN Representative of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Initiative (IBAHRI)

Facilitator:
Irina Beridze, Executive Programme Manager, International Association of Prosecutors

This introductory session will provide a general overview of the key UN Human Rights bodies, mechanisms, and tools that make up the United Nations human rights system. For those who are new to the system or those who are seeking a refresher, this webinar will introduce or enhance understanding of how UN international human rights mechanisms function and how they may intersect with prosecutorial work.

Understanding the UN human rights mechanisms can be an essential factor for prosecutors. It equips them with tools and knowledge to uphold international legal standards, ensure fair trial guarantees, and contribute to accountability for serious human rights violations. These mechanisms—such as treaty bodies, Special Procedures, and the Universal Periodic Review, but also the investigation and accountability mechanisms of the UN human rights council—offer valuable sources of information, guidance, and jurisprudence that can support prosecutorial strategies, especially in cases involving human rights violations, and other crimes under international law. By engaging with the UN human rights system, prosecutors can better identify patterns of abuse, gather contextual evidence, and collaborate with international litigators to advance justice and prevent impunity. In short, integrating UN human rights perspectives may strengthen the integrity, legitimacy, and impact of prosecutorial work.

Participants will gain valuable insights into the role and the work of the UN Human Rights Council, its accountability and investigative mechanisms, and Special Procedures, and how these mechanisms can support accountability and justice efforts at the national and international levels. This is an opportunity to strengthen your practice through a deeper knowledge of the UN human rights architecture.

This 60-minute webinar will be held in English and no interpretation will be provided. However, attendees can access live automated translated captions via the Zoom platform during the webinar. All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance. The webinar is open to all IAP organisational and individual members.

Please note that this webinar will be recorded.
