This webinar will detail an operational case summary where digital evidence was used to prove critical elements in a fraud and corruption case.

A group of Members of Parliament (politicians) were accused of providing false information about their permanent residences to unlawfully claim travel and other allowances. The case centred on proving the actual place of residence of the suspects, which was essential to establish fraud and corruption.

Traditional evidence proved inadequate due to limitations in verifying physical presence. To overcome this, investigators adopted a creative approach by leveraging digital evidence - specifically Call Detail Records (CDRs) and Cell Site Analysis (CSA)—obtained from mobile phone service providers.

This digital trail enabled the team to map the suspects’ real locations over time, offering a reliable method to infer their true place of residence. The case exemplifies how innovative use of mobile data can meet the high evidentiary standards required in criminal proceedings, especially in complex fraud and corruption investigations.

The most innovative approach of this was that it provided an opportunity to submit analysis through number of drafts and charts which made it way for the judge to understand the voluminous digits evidence in a coherent and methodical manner.
