The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a cornerstone of the Human Rights Council’s work, providing a unique mechanism through which States review each other’s human rights records and share good practices. Prosecutors, as key actors within national justice systems, have a critical role to play in ensuring that human rights commitments made under the UPR translate into concrete justice outcomes.
Prosecutors play a pivotal role in the implementation of UPR recommendations by ensuring that the commitments made by States translate into effective actions within the justice system. Through their mandate, prosecutors can promote the integration of human rights standards into prosecutorial policies, procedures, and decision-making processes. By actively engaging in the monitoring and reporting of progress, collaborating with other justice sector actors, and addressing gaps identified during the UPR, prosecutors contribute to building accountability and safeguarding the rights of individuals. Their involvement is essential for turning international obligations into practical measures that enhance access to justice and uphold the rule of law.
This webinar will explore various ways in which prosecution services can engage in the UPR process, including contributing to national reporting, participating in multi-stakeholder consultations, supporting the implementation and using information.
By fostering dialogue and exchange, the event aims to strengthen the integration of prosecutorial perspectives into the UPR framework and vice-versa and promote a coherent approach to accountability, access to justice, and human rights implementation.
