Advanced Workshop for East African Prosecutors

7/30/2018

PSV Network Co-Focal Point for Knowledge Exchange Laurel Baig participated in an advanced training for East African prosecutors in July/August. Held in Uganda, the Prosecution of International Crimes workshop brought together national prosecutors from jurisdictions including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Laurel incorporated components on sexual violence crimes and a strategic charging case study integrating conflict-related sexual violence into the week-long program. Participants worked through the case study to develop investigation plans. They also discussed witness-centred approaches and practiced these techniques by examining and cross-examining a mock victim-witness. The workshop was organized by the Office of the Prosecutor of the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals and Strathmore University, in cooperation with the International Nuremberg Principles Academy and the Belgian Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Office.
