Declaration of the Prosecutors' college of the Supreme Judicial Council of Republic of Bulgaria - 2 May 2023

The IAP has been horrified to learn that the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Bulgaria, Ivan Geshev, was the target of an assassination attempt on May 1, 2023.

Mr Geshev was reportedly returning to Sofia from Samakov, when a roadside bomb exploded as his motorcade passed by. 

It is understood the bomb contained shrapnel and the equivalent of 3 kilograms of TNT, and that the explosion caused a crater four meters wide and 40 centimetres deep.

We are greatly relieved that Mr Geshev survived unscathed, and that nobody was injured in this attack.

The Interior Ministry has opened an investigation into the outrage and vowed to track down the culprits, and the IAP welcomes this development.

It is vital that States ensure that prosecutors (together with their families) are fully protected, whether at work or play, and the attempt on Mr Geshev's life is a timely reminder that constant vigilance is essential.

The Prosecutors College of the Supreme Judicial Council of the Republic of Bulgaria has issued a Declaration in response to the attack, and that is attached herewith.
