The passing of Mr. Robert M. Morgenthau

7/31/2019

It is with great sadness and sorrow that the International Association of Prosecutors announces the passing of our Medal of Honour recipient Robert M. Morgenthau.

Mr. Morgenthau received the IAP Medal of Honour in 2013 for his contributions for over 40 years to criminal justice and the highest prosecutorial standards. It is the highest honour that our organisation bestows, which was well-deserved by Mr. Morgenthau.

Prior to his receiving the award, Mr. Morgenthau had a very nice visit in his law firm with James Hamilton, the former IAP President and Director of Public Prosecutions in Ireland, along with former Secretary-General Derk Kuipers and Executive Committee Member and former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Tom Burrows. The IAP representatives heard from him many interesting stories that were exchanged with wit and charm.

At the IAP annual conference that September in Moscow, a video was played of the acceptance speech given by Mr. Morgenthau at the ceremony. The speech was very highly regarded for his emphasis on fairness and the ethical obligations of prosecutors.

Mr. Morgenthau will be sorely missed by prosecutors and law enforcement professionals around the world. But he will always be remembered for his commitment to justice, his integrity, and his inspiration of thousands of young prosecutors. The lessons he taught prosecutors will live on indefinitely.
