First Specialisation Course in International and Transnational Criminal law a great Success

7/30/2016

For the first time, the IAP and the ISISC brought together 51 prosecutors from 34 different countries and six continents to complete the first specialisation course for junior prosecutors this July. The course is a partnership between the IAP and the ISISC and took place in Siracusa, Italy.

The main objective of the 'Siracusa-course' was to a) train and specialise the prosecutors in international and transnational criminal law and justice and b) to create strong informal bonds among them for future transnational collaboration. The objective responds to an indespensible need for prosecutors globally to be well-informed of and to be exposed to international legal orders and transnational legal mechanisms. Through 18 sessions some of the world's great international and transnational lawyers and prosecutors took the candidates through key issues in international criminal law and international cooperation in penal matters. The sessions were characterised by intense interaction and fruitful discussions and created a unique space for sharing of challenges and experiences across borders, both between instructors and between candidates.

The IAP and ISISC are now conducting a full evaluation to deliver a joint recommendation on how to proceed to the second course. We will be looking into how best to use the experiences of this first course to present a second and even better course programme.
